Can provide provable security; HMAC is secure under certain assumptions.
Producing a valid MAC output is equivalent to one of these attacks on the underlying hash function:
- Computing a compression-function output when the IV is random, secret, and unknown to the attacker.
- Finding a collision in a hash function whose IV is random and secret.
⇒ Related to finding a collision in the underlying hash function.
